Salt Lake Co. leaders show support for #MaskUpUtah campaign

SANDY, Utah — Mayors from Salt Lake County, business and healthcare leaders, local athletes and even mascots from some of Utah’s sports organizations came together Wednesday to urge Utahns to continue wearing masks to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“The time for us to act is now. We have to course-correct immediately if we want to be able to maintain the care of our patients,” said Dr. Edward A. Stenehjem, Intermountain Healthcare, during a news conference Wednesday at Rio Tinto Stadium. “The science is clear, this is not open for discussion, masks reduce transmission, it’s that easy, masks provide a safer community and that’s why we’re all here today to support that message.”

As coronavirus cases rise, some Utahns still not wearing masks in public

As coronavirus cases continue to rise in Utah, the Salt Lake County Health Department is concerned people are not taking the pandemic seriously.

On Monday, 444 cases were reported in the state. 135 of those cases were in Salt Lake County.

But it seems, as businesses reopen, some are becoming more relaxed when it comes to the pandemic.

“I think with businesses and the economy reopening in the last several weeks, people have thought that means this is not as serious, people don’t need to take it as serious and that is not true,” Nicholas Rupp, spokesperson for the Salt Lake County Health Department, said.

Walk into John’s Marketplace off of Redwood Road, and you wouldn’t know there’s an ongoing pandemic.
